Metabolism for energy production plays a key role in our cells and controls other cellular reactions. The multiple specific steps in pathways of catabolism are complex, but commonly generate reduced ATP, NADH or FADH that provide a source of electrons, entering the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation.
