Description
Creating a bedtime routine for your child has many benefits not just for the child but a consistent routine also gives parents that much-needed time to unwind and relax themselves.
Often parents have things to catch up on when their children are in bed and when there is no bedtime routine or their children are in and out of bed or their parents are up and down stairs 10.... 20 times a night there is no time for parents to do what they planned or to relax.
This is when overtired and overwhelm kicks in for both parent and child.
A consistent bedtime routine goes beyond improving sleep for a young child, research has proven that routine and sleep contribute to the child's overall health and well-being and stimulation across all areas of learning and development, including attention span, emotional and behavioural development and parent-child attachment, particularly in early childhood.
A bedtime routine promotes a time for parent and child to enjoy close time together and helps a child to recognise what happens next in the routine.
A child who experiences persistent sleep deprivation often struggles with emotional regulation and the ability to pay attention in a nursery class or in the educational environment, and this impacts their overall capacity to learn and develop. A child with sleep deprivation often impacts on tipping parents into experiencing stress, anxiety, exhaustion and overwhlem.
A well-established bedtime routine includes what happens prior to preparation for bed.
Nutrition: Evening meals & Healthy Snacks
Hygiene: Bathtime - Teeth Cleaning
Sharing time: Talking, reading a book or singing lullabies
Close time: Rocking, cuddling
Technology Limit technology, scrolling and overstimulation of the brain before bed
1. A sleep routine
Is not just about putting your child to bed, there are many other factors that lead up to it.
2. Developing a routine
This means both you and your child get that much-needed rest and restore time instead of a constant battle of wills at bedtime. An effective routine you can trust to deliver results, helps the child to get the hours of restorative sleep much needed for their age and stage of development.
This also means parents get the freedom to unwind and relax in a child-free zone in the evenings.
3. Mindfulness meditation
As a clinical hypnotherapist who uses CBT tools and techniques including mindfulness meditation with my clients, I have years of experience working with children and more recently using sleep meditation with children in therapy is like a magic wand. It is particularly beneficial for children with stress and anxiety.
Meditation and Mindfulness practices help a child to focus on the instructions and distract their conscious mind from replaying thoughts and events of the day over and over.
4. Consistency
An effective routine you can trust to deliver results doesn't happen overnight, it needs to be consistently practised to become habitual. Once the routine is established and your child becomes familiar with the steps within their routine, many children end up taking the lead asking to go to bed and put their meditation on, trust me this does happen and not just with one or tow children, many children enjoy the benefit of improved sleep and routine.
