Conformity assessment, hazard categorisation, CE & UKCA marking, PSSR duties and the written scheme of examination
What you'll learn
⚡ Determine the hazard category (I to IV) from fluid group and the conformity-assessment charts
⚡ Select the conformity-assessment module and understand the notified body's role
⚡ Apply the Essential Safety Requirements, harmonised standards (EN 13445/13480) and CE / UKCA marking
⚡ Understand PSSR duties and prepare and use a written scheme of examination
⚡ Distinguish the design-and-build (PED) regime from the in-service (PSSR) regime, and compare with the ASME/US approach
⚡ Identify what counts as pressure equipment - vessels, piping, safety accessories, pressure accessories and assemblies
⚡ Understand the roles of manufacturer, notified/approved body and the user/duty holder
⚡ Apply Sound Engineering Practice and the PED scope and exclusions
⚡ Establish safe operating limits and the competent person's examination role
⚡ Manage records, compliance and the interface with risk-based and API in-service inspection
Requirements
❗ Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow the course
❗ Particularly relevant if you work in, or supply into, the EU and UK pressure-equipment market
❗ No software or purchases needed - access to the Directive and the Regulations is useful alongside the course but not required
Description
▸In Europe and the UK, pressure equipment is not governed by a code. It is governed by law.
Get the regulatory route wrong and a perfectly engineered vessel cannot legally be placed on the market. Operate a pressure system without an adequate written scheme of examination and the duty holder is personally exposed. These are not engineering judgements you can argue about - they are statutory obligations with enforcement behind them.
Almost all pressure-equipment training available online is US-centric and code-only: ASME, API, and the design rules. Useful, and not the thing that will land on your desk from a notified body or an HSE inspector. This course covers the regulatory landscape that governs the EU and UK market - the Pressure Equipment Directive for design and build, and the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations for operation.
▸A briefing, not a marathon
This is deliberately concise. Four focused sections, worked through in an afternoon, covering what you are legally required to do and how to demonstrate you have done it. No twenty hours of statute read aloud - the regulatory framework, the decision points, and the documents you have to produce.
▸What you will master
✨ Determine the hazard category (I to IV) from fluid group and the PS-V and PS-DN conformity assessment charts - the decision everything else follows from
✨ Select the right conformity assessment module and understand exactly where the notified body enters the process
✨ Apply the Essential Safety Requirements, harmonised standards (EN 13445 and EN 13480) and CE / UKCA marking correctly
✨ Prepare and use a written scheme of examination that will stand up to scrutiny, and understand the competent person's examination role
✨ Apply the PED scope, exclusions and Sound Engineering Practice - and recognise when equipment falls outside the Directive entirely
✨ Identify what counts as pressure equipment - vessels, piping, safety accessories, pressure accessories and assemblies
✨ Understand the distinct roles and liabilities of manufacturer, notified or approved body, and user or duty holder
✨ Establish safe operating limits and the records that evidence compliance
✨ Align statutory examination with risk-based inspection and the API in-service codes, instead of running two disconnected regimes
✨ Distinguish the design-and-build (PED) regime from the in-service (PSSR) regime, and map both against the ASME and US approach
▸
Who this course is for
⭐ Mechanical, process and project engineers placing pressure equipment on the EU or UK market under PED
⭐ Duty holders, plant and HSE engineers operating pressure systems under PSSR
⭐ Inspection and integrity engineers who need to align statutory examination with risk-based inspection
⭐ Manufacturers, fabricators and suppliers needing to navigate conformity assessment and CE / UKCA marking
⭐ Engineers moving between the API/ASME and the PED/PSSR worlds who need the regulatory bridge
