Description
This course provides a comprehensive and practical introduction to the Q‑system for rock tunnel support design, with a strong focus on real‑world application. It is designed for students and early‑career engineers who wish to understand how geological observations are translated into practical and defensible tunnel support solutions.
A major focus of the course is the calculation of the Q‑value, where each parameter (RQD, Jn, Jr, Ja, Jw, and SRF) is explained in physical terms and applied using realistic tunnel descriptions. Students learn how to classify rock mass quality and understand its implications for tunnel behaviour.
The course provides step‑by‑step guidance on using the Q‑support chart, including the role of excavation span, wall height, ESR, and equivalent dimension. Practical tunnel project examples and case studies are used to demonstrate support selection, including rock bolt length, bolt spacing, and shotcrete thickness.
Special emphasis is placed on understanding the differences between tunnel crown and sidewall support, as well as the progression of support categories from light support to heavy systems requiring reinforced ribs or special evaluation.
By the end of the course, students will be able to confidently apply the Q‑system in practice, while also recognizing the importance of engineering judgement, observation, and design limitations in rock tunnel support.
