Accompanying them is Stele's sister Elsya, who hopes to marry a prince of another tribe. They discover a hidden valley inhabited by a people who rule both this small vale and a larger, morę fertile land on the far side of the mountains. But the latter county is threatened by a plague of large, semi-intelligent rodents, and the newcomers join forces with Prince Thelmo and Princess Tekla to fight the invasion.

Can early humanity survive this crisis? Or is mankind doomed to become the main food supply of another, morę dominant species?
